Friday evening 8th May to Monday lunchtime 11th May Mini-Sesshin - with visiting teacher Daniel Kōjin Gallagher, Sensei and Jeremy Ryōkan Woodcock, Sensei. It is a delight to have Kōjin Sensei with us. He will give talks on Saturday and Sunday and speak into his book on Zen Master Dogen’s Fukanzazenji, Meeting the True Dragon.

Rev. Dr. Daniel Kōjin Bushin Gallagher was born in Newton, Massachusetts. He earned a BA and an MA from Saint Michael’s College in Vermont while working full-time as an advanced life support emergency medical technician. Deeply affected by the suffering he witnessed on the ambulance, Kōjin began a spiritual quest inspired by an undergraduate course in Buddhism. After beginning Zen meditation in Burlington, Vermont in 1991, he moved to Japan in 1992 to pursue further Zen training while teaching English. In 1994, Kōjin relocated to France to pursue a PhD in Comparative Literature at the Université de Paris III – Sorbonne Nouvelle. While living in Paris, Kōjin continued his Zen practise at Dana Sangha in Montreuil, under the guidance of Genno Roshi. In 2004, Kōjin met Keizan Roshi, now Abbot of Stonewater Zen Sangha  in the Netherlands and in 2008, he began the first of several visits to Keizan Roshi in Liverpool before eventually moving there in 2015. In 2016, Keizan Roshi ordained him, and in October 2024 Kōjin received Dharma Transmission from Keizan Roshi. Along with his academic publications in French, Kōjin Sensei is the author of Meeting the True Dragon: Zen Master Dogen’s Fukanzazengi (2019), and Striking Emptiness: Zen Master Dogen’s Bendowa (2024).

This mini-sesshin is an opportunity for the sangha to come together to practice, to cook and work together, share meals and celebrate the wonderful unfolding of Buddhanature,

There is accommodation in the house (which can include camping in the garden for those who wish). Those coming locally may sleep at home while keeping Noble Silence. We will gather from 16.30 on Friday, have supper together at 18.00 and our first sitting at 19.00. We will end sitting at 13.00 on Monday followed by lunch and clear up, and away by 14.30. See below for the full Sesshin timetable.

Suggested minimum donation for this four day Mini-Sesshin is £108. If you choose to come for a day the suggested donation is £36, these suggested donations cover the costs of running the sesshin. In addition you are encouraged to offer Dana, which is a gift to the teachers for their teaching. This can be done online or in a Dana bowl that will be in the house. If you would like to come for a day, please contact Sensei to organise it, so we can minimise disruption to the flow of the sesshin.
