Zazenkai and Sesshin
On Sunday 18th January 10.30-16.30 we will have a Zazenkai with Simon Kōgen Heale. Please let Sensei know if you’d like to come, and are available to put your shoulder to the Dharma wheel, by supporting the day through shopping for food, cooking, preparing the Zendo, and the Daisan rooms, and with a clear-up afterwards.
It will be a gift to have Kōgen Sensei with us. Simon Kōgen Heale grew up as part of a Quaker community which provided him with his first experiences of shared silence. In his early twenties he travelled overland to Asia encountering Buddhism for the first time in China and Tibet. He continued to combine travel with working with homeless communities, University life and Buddhist practice throughout his twenties. During a sesshin in the UK in 1999 he met Genpo Roshi and shortly after moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he lived in community with Genpo for the next six years. He also spent over a year at Yokoji Zen Mountain Centre, California training with Tenshin Fletcher Roshi.
Arriving back in the UK Kōgen Sensei trained at the Karuna Institute on Dartmoor as a Core Process Psychotherapist and as well working as the Assistant Director of the Centre for Better Health, a Mental Health Charity in Hackney, East London. Simon now lives and works as a psychotherapist in Sheffield, and is a teacher at the Karuna Institute, which is now based in Bristol. He lives in the Peak District National park, and enjoys all it offers including cold water swimming and foraging.
Every second month there will either be a Zazenkai, an extended day of quiet practice with a Teisho, and Daisan or a Mini-Sesshin, an extended opportunity to deepen practice with Teisho, Daisan, Work Practice and Liturgy Friday afternoon 16.30 to Sunday at 16.30.
See the Retreats and Events page for more detail about Zazenkai and Sesshin.Zazenkai and Sesshin
Friday Evening 5th December - Monday 8th December Rohatsu Mini-Sesshin with Jeremy Ryōkan Woodcock, Sensei and Manu Myōshin Bazzano, Dharma Holder within the Stonewater Zen Sangha. This sesshin is an extended opportunity to deepen practice as we celebrate the anniversary of the Buddha’s Enlightenment. Each day there will be a Dharma Talk, interviews with Sensei and Myōshin, Work Practice and Liturgy with simple shared vegetarian meals. There is accommodation in the house but those coming locally may also sleep at home while keeping Noble Silence. We will gather from 16.30 on Friday, have supper together at 18.00 and our first sitting at 19.00. We will end sitting at 13.30 on Monday followed by lunch and clear up, and away by 14.30. See below for the full Sesshin timetable.
Suggested minimum donation for this four day Mini-Sesshin is £108. If you choose to come for a day the suggested donation is £36, these suggested donations cover the costs of running the sesshin. In addition you are encouraged to offer Dana, which is a gift to the teachers for their teaching. This can be done online or in a Dana bowl that will be in the house. If you would like to come for a day, please contact Sensei to organise it, so we can minimise disruption to the flow of the sesshin. If you would struggle to pay there is no requirement to make a donation, your presence alone is a gift.
